Art work inspired by Matisse

During this month’s busy session on Friday, April 24, we created artwork inspired by Henri Matisse.

Henri Matisse was a French artist known for his bold colours, simple shapes, and later in life, his famous paper cut outs.

Instead of detailed drawing, he used big, bright, easy to see shapes that he cut from coloured paper and arranged into vibrant collages.

This activity was chosen by 94-year-old Oliva Quail who had previously created a striking papier mâché sculpture of a miner, which was once held in the collection of the National Museum of Wales during the 2015 Pride Cymru event in Cardiff.

The Sculpture was of 'Bryn', a miner wearing a 'Lesbians & Gay Men Support the Miners' t-shirt.

Our craft club members really enjoyed themselves creating original pieces of art based on cut-outs.

Photos show the group creating with a photo also of Olivia Quail and her sculpture of ‘Bryn’ the miner.
