Abergwyngregyn to Llanfairfechan
On a wonderful Spring day, 29 members joined our latest walk between Abergwyngregyn and Llanfairfechan.
Abergwyngregyn was once the site of the favourite court, or palace, of the princes of Gwynedd.
There are remains of a motte and bailey castle that was probably built by the Normans in the 11th century.
The remains of the court of the princes of Wales from the 13th century are less conspicuous.
In 1993, excavations uncovered the foundations of a large hall, as well as pottery from the 13th and 14th centuries, and historians have suggested that the palace is here.
Today the village is also famous for its Rhaeadr Fawr falls and for the whisky and gin distillery.
This was an easy walk along the unspoilt coastline offering great bird watching opportunities as well as beautiful views towards Ynys Môn and Ynys Seiriol with the Carneddau mountains in the background.
The leader this time was Kevin 'Bach' Williams - best known as a former DJ with Capital FM but can now be heard on Môn FM.
Although some sections of the beach and the stony path proved challenging for the walkers at times, everyone agreed that they had enjoyed it very much – in the company of great companions.
Traeth Lafan is a Designated Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Protection Area, and is recognised as an important site for birds. This walk visited three nature reserves including Morfa Madryn where we enjoyed our lunch.
In no time, we arrived at Llanfairfechan and enjoyed a cup of tea, cakes and ice cream in the welcoming café there before being picked up by the bus back to Bangor. Everyone is now looking forward to the group's next tour, which is on the third Wednesday of every month. Details to follow.
