Blind men undertake sponsored swim for refugee charity
Two blind men are to undertake a sponsored swim on behalf of a refugee charity.
And Cymdeithas Deillion Gogledd Cymru have been asked to help publicise the event.
Barry Dickinson and Chris Copeman plan to swim 400 lengths – or 10km.
The two are both long-standing members of NWSB and regularly enjoy the monthly guided walks.
Barry is accompanied on the walks by his guide dog, Tigger.
Barry said: “My wife Heulwen and I are trustees of another small local charity - Refugee Relief Ynys Môn.
“For the past few years my wife has organised an annual sponsored event on behalf of this charity.
“Thanks to the generous support of friends and family members these events have always brought in donations that have enabled our charity to continue with its mission to help those in need.
Barry said: “Sadly as Heulwen’s health continues to deteriorate as a result of chemotherapy, it has not been possible for her to participate this year.
“Therefore myself, together with good friend Chris Copeman, have volunteered to take up the reins.
“As both Chris and I go swimming together at our local pool in Llandudno on a regular basis, we have chosen to organise a sponsored swim on behalf of charity RRYM.”
They will be holding sponsored swims in Llandudno Swimming Pool throughout next month, December.
Below is a link to the RRYM charity, explaining the work they do and more about next month’s swim and how people can help.
Barry said: “If you could please consider sponsoring Chris or myself, or if you would care to organise your own sponsored swim on behalf of our charity we would be delighted!”
RRYM provides relief for the victims of war or political persecution who are forced to flee their homes with limited resources.
At present they are sponsoring 10 disabled refugee children in Lebanon to attend school for one day a week.
They are provided with transport to and from the camps where they live. The children receive a basic education in Arabic and English literacy and mathematics, as well as an opportunity to make new friends.
The charity also helps towards maintaining a community library in Kiangwali refugee camp, Uganda.
The library caters for 150,000 camp residents, and some local families who are unable to afford books.
It contains children’s books, student textbooks and everything in between.
The project also provides a tailoring school which takes 10 learners for every three months, empowering teenage mothers who were forced to drop out of school due to early/unwanted pregnancies.
