Three Open Days a great success

A good number of people living with sight loss attended three Open Days organised by the North Wales Society of the Blind.

The Open Days were held at Pendre Hall, Tywyn, Plas Heli, Pwllheli and The White Lion, Bala on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of last week – May 28, 29 and 30.

The events were an opportunity for blind and people living with sight loss to meet the Society's staff for advice, support, and information.

There were also exhibitions of specialist equipment with Jason Shaw from Vision Aid demonstrating the different types of new technology available.

Over the past few years we have held Open Days in Porthmadog, Wales, Llandudno, Portmeirion and Welshpool.

The Society's engagement officer, Bethan Williams, said: "We are here to support and empower individuals living with visual impairments, giving them access to new technology and essential services. The purpose of the events was to reach those who may find it difficult to travel to our resource centre in Bangor, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to explore innovative equipment and resources tailored to their needs.”

Our vision and rehabilitation specialists, Wendy Price and Annest Jeffery, were present to offer guidance and support, as well as development officer Nick Thomas.

Bethan said: “Jason Shaw from VisionAid came to showcase the latest developments in assistive technology, demonstrating high-tech equipment that can enhance independence for those with visual impairments.

“From magnifiers to advanced reading devices, attendees had the chance to see for themselves how these devices could transform their daily lives.

“The Open Days also provided a welcoming space for individuals to meet each other, share experiences, and receive personal support in a relaxed environment. It was a great opportunity to engage with experts, ask questions, and explore options that might not otherwise be accessible.

She added: “By bringing these services directly to local communities, the Society reaffirmed its commitment to inclusion and accessibility, ensuring that those with sight loss receive support wherever they are.

“The success of the three days in Tywyn, Pwllheli, and Bala highlighted the importance of outreach efforts and the positive impact they can have on individuals living with sight loss.”
